Netflix has just announced via Deadline that they've picked up the next Scooby-Doo show, which will be a live-action reimagining of the franchise. The series will be written by Scott Rosenberg and Josh Applebaum, who recently also wrote a live-action re-imagining of Cowboy Bebop. The show is slated to be executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman, André Nemec, and Jeff Pinkner, as well as writers Rosenberg and Applebaum mentioned above. The show will be produced by Berlanti Productions, who is most famous for having produced The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and recently made the Netflix top 10 last week with Dead Boy Detectives. It's worth noting that the aforementioned listed series are all adult series with TV-14 or above ratings, so while the article doesn't officially confirm it, it is a likely possibility that this is an adult Scooby-Doo show. No other details about the show are currently known, other than the series is tentatively titled Scooby-Doo! The Live Action Series.

I’m tired of the “Scooby-Doo but if it was edgy” trope. It’s too played out in parodies as it is. I hate official media jumping on that. I like the cutesy and goofy stuff a lot more.

I'm not really sure if they'll choose to make it super edgy again here, but I hope not, at least not in the way Velma is. I would love a mature Scooby show in the vein of Zombie Island or SDMI.

I’m actually intrigued, but my hopes aren’t too high because of how abominable Velma was. I’ve always said that this kind of thing could work for Scooby Doo if done WELL. It can allow for some darker mysteries and crimes and stuff. I understand there will be some relationship stuff in there, it was even in SDMI which is what I’m hoping this is a closer comparison to than Velma, but I’m hoping they keep it at a tolerable level, and really focus on getting a dark mystery and atmosphere

I'm on the same page as you right now, I really hope they've learned from Velma that "adult" doesn't have to mean super in-your-face constant edginess to the point where it detracts from the plot. I would love something like that Mystery Incorporated fan series. I doubt this is what's happening and this is just a wild conspiracy theory, but it would be really cool if their silence for the past two years meant somehow they got involved with this Netflix show.

I feel like the silence there does have something to do with this being a thing, but I’d be surprised if it was them getting involved with Netflix rather than them being forced to stop 4/29/2024 10:05:29 pm
You're probably right, my only reason for thinking there was a remote possibility of them getting involved was that they did post an update last year saying "We are currently having the conversations needed to take this to the next level, minimize the wait time between episodes and eliminate the need for crowd funding." I think it's a long shot though and them being forced to stop is more likely. Interesting such a similar thing happened with Total Drama.
Becker
5/1/2024 01:24:50 am
I don't think cease and desist requests towards these fan projects necessarily have to do with the companies having official productions already being in the works. There have been numerous fan series of Total Drama since Reunion was struck down, yet none of them have been obligated to stop despite coming out much closer or even during the airing of the 2 new official seasons. And I don't know if the issue was specifically the use of the OG characters in Reunion, given the reboot had a brand new cast.

For me it was just this part that made me think it could be a possibility although slim: 5/2/2024 09:54:07 am
I was wondering that too. They mentioned in their June update that they were having conversations to "eliminate the need for crowdfunding" like I mentioned above, so clearly they were in talks with some studio/production company. It could be something entirely different from this, or maybe even something that didn't work out, but I also think there's a slim possibility they could mean this.

I'm hesitant about it as well after Velma, but considering we don't know much about it, imo it's a bit early to get upset about it and believe it's going to launch the franchise into another dark age. I may be wrong though, it could be another terrible series. We'll just have to wait and see.

How much CGI will be used for Scooby and Frank Welker be voicing him in the upcoming live action series?

Scooby looked better in the 2002 & 2004 movies than the 2009 & 2010 ones, so I'd rather they try to use less CGI. Have a real dog there on set and then use CGI to enhance the anthropomorphic features would be ideal. Frank Welker would probably return to voice him, given he did the last couple of times they did live-action films and he was also the only current voice actor brought for Scoob! too. 4/30/2024 11:32:27 am
Yeah, I had the same thought after Velma. If it were like the Mystery Incorporated fan series on YouTube, I think I'd enjoy it, but I don't want another adult show that focuses more on edgy commentary/raunchiness over establishing a dark tone and having a good mystery.

Yeah, I also feel pretty mixed about this. I haven't seen either of the series you mentioned, but I did watch Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which I enjoyed up until the last season, when I felt the quality went downhill a bit. I also worry about the issues with Velma being repeated. In terms of SDMI, I would enjoy the series having a tone like that again, as long as there wasn't a repeat of something like the Shaggy/Velma drama from season 1. I thought they handled Fred and Daphne's relationship pretty well in that show, but the Shaggy and Velma stuff got obnoxious fast imo.

They were still going to release more kiddy content alongside the more mature content, like Holiday Haunt and Mystery Pups, but Zaslav cancelled them. So now there's no balance. Mystery Pups probably would've come out between these two more mature Scooby shows, which would've felt like less of a drastic change in audience targetting for the franchise recently. The only all-ages content we might get soon is the Gremlins crossover. 5/1/2024 09:39:37 am
I could see them still continuing to release the yearly DTVs while this series is coming out, so there's more of a balance between the mature stuff and all-ages stuff. The only uncertainty is about Zaslav continuing to cancel stuff, which could definitely keep happening and may mean we get no DTVs.

Tbf, the Powerpuff live-action show never got released cuz the execs were sensible enough to cancel it immediately when they saw how terrible it was. And the guy who was in charge of Riverdale isn't working on this Scooby show, which is a huge sigh of relief.

They made this whole thing about her getting a new look and new attitude, and her annoyance with Norville always being there for Velma when she didn't feel the same way (or if she did, she would just ignore the feelings of being a good person). And then in season 2, Gigi was just another popular girl again. All that for nothing.

It is kind of a case by case basis (no pun intended lol) as to whether they're wrong or not. Anyone with a Google account can edit IMDb, so I'm a little hesitant to trust it, but there have also been times where IMDb has been right about things. In 2012, there were two SDMI titles revealed on IMDb a year before they aired ("Stand and Deliver" and "Gates of Gloom"), so I'm not sure if the Mystery Cases listing is correct or not.

If the guy from the Riverdale/Sabrina series is behind this, then don't expect much. I hope I'm wrong, of course, but I watched both shows and they had the same problems.

It's the same production company, but the writers and showrunner for Sabrina and Riverdale aren't involved with this thankfully. That said, I still wouldn't be surprised if it gets overly bogged down in teenage drama, since that seems to happen more often than not in shows about teens, but I'm hopeful that's not the case.

That's a relief. I understand you can't avoid teen drama entirely, but please don't focus on that. Also, they should go with a serial killer or with supernatural threats, because the whole guy in a mask thing won't work in live action. Let's hope for the best. 5/9/2024 09:52:32 pm
Completely agreed. I don't know if a serial killer would be the best idea, since people might be a bit traumatized from that idea being used in Velma lol, but I suppose it would work if they did it from the right angle. I don't quite agree about the person in the mask thing not working in live-action. I see where you're coming from that there's the potential of it seeming goofy, but I think it really depends on how well it's written. I feel like it worked decently well in the four live-action movies that we got.

We should trust Warner Bros on this live action series they're working on with Netflix

I just wanted to comment here.. I'm not really that interested in live action Scooby Doo.. I mean, its nice to have and we've had a ton of Scooby Doo animation but I feel strongly that some things shouldn't be live action.. its all the rage to do it, highest chance of a hit making money but also it takes alot to make something quality in live action. I also feel like Scooby is best when its episodic and unless its really good, I don't really care for serial storytelling. I don't know, the people involved don't inspire confidence.. will say, I doubt it will be much like Velma.. just a more modern teen show that has CW vibes. Which is fine at best and could be really bad as well. Just my thoughts.

Even though I'd say I'm a bit more open to live action, I agree that making something live-action is much more difficult to pull off than animation. While I did enjoy them, the live-action movies we've gotten so far would be a mixed bag in terms of them being turned into series. I think the first two live-action films worked as movies, but I wouldn't want a whole series in that style. Mystery Begins would work imo as long as they leaned more towards the first movie rather than the romantic drama of the second. I liked Daphne & Velma, but I know a lot of people didn't enjoy the film so I can't see a full series ever being made based off of it. I'm remaining optimistic though and hoping the series we get is a good one.

As long as there's Hanna-Barbera sound effects and CGI for Scooby, This will be the 'Best Live Action Series Ever'.

I have no doubt that a live action Scooby can be pulled off, doing mystery/crime shows aren’t really the difficult part, its having it be engaging and working with talking dog in the mix, who is the main character. I’m a Doctor Who fan and I feel like that type of joyous tone with a little bit of drama, horror mystery would be suited for Scooby here.. but need the locations, story to pop with it. 5/12/2024 04:51:33 am
@WildwindVampire Hey, speaking of a Daphne & Velma series,......what do you think of this?https://scooby-doofanon.fandom.com/wiki/Daphne_%26_Velma_(TV_series) 5/12/2024 11:15:38 am
@Matt LK I'm a Doctor Who fan as well! I totally agree that Scooby works best with a good balance of comedy and horror, and the atmosphere and writing of the mystery are really important as well. Even if I don't think it will be exactly like Velma, I am still a bit worried as to how this will turn out after how bad that show was. I feel focusing on the dynamic of the gang and developing them in a more mature way as characters is definitely the right way to go about it, rather than emphasizing drama or trying to be raunchy to prove that it's an "adult" series like Velma did.

@Matt LK The Netflix series should have comedy like the Pink Panther films

Please let this be an epic live action of Mystery Incorporated, that would be so great and I would have no issues with it. They could also pull off making that more adult seeing how characters die in it and there's more romance.

Netflix has come out with some pretty decent series the last couple of years, so I think that’s definitely promising. I don’t see any reason to doubt its potential yet. Fingers crossed! 5/16/2024 09:08:31 am
A live-action adaption of Mystery Incorporated would be awesome as long as they didn't go overboard with the romantic subplots like in SDMI.

It's not gonna be a Mystery Incorporated adaptation 5/16/2024 09:30:59 pm
I also doubt it will be an exact adaption of Mystery Incorporated, but I would enjoy if it had a similar tone.
